holding yourself accountable
For someone that is working out several days a week and is looking for significant results through a vigorous cardio workout, or just a simple workout plan should invest in a heart rate monitor. Heart rate monitors give you the ability to know where you are in your heart rate zone, it will tell you if you are to high, to low, or where you are at in your target heart rate zone. Some people have a hard time motivating themselves when running, and when they are strapped with a monitor they have no choice but to work harder to stay in that target zone. I think that heart rate monitors are great for in the classroom as well, i feel like they really hold the students accountable and is a very accurate way to grade your students

Got Next?
A great way to stay fit and build cardiovascular strenght and endurance is to play the sport of basketball. Every day at the ARC hundreds of people filter through the basketball courts and play pick up basketball. All skill levels and all diffrent kinds of people come together to play the game to enjoy it and to get a GREAT workout. The normal rules of playing a full court game of basketball at the ARC are that it is 5 on 5, first team to 11 points with 2 point shots worth 1 and 3 pointers worth 2. Winners stay on and whoever calls next will get the chance to play next. I have been playing basketball in one of my physical education classes where i have a heartrate strap on me and I am recording around 30 to 40 minutes in my target heart rate zone per class. It is alot of fun even though i would never catagorise myself as a good player, or have a good shot.

Getting Active!
Intramurals at Slippery Rock is a fun way to stay in shape. They are cheap, and fun and organized. Here at Slippery Rock flag football and basketball are the most popular IM sports, along with soccer, softball and ultamite frisbee popular as well. IM sports have diffrent levels so that you do not have to worrie about playing out of your league or having to worrie about competition. IM sports give students to play some non-traditional sports like badminton, table tennis, bowling, and raquetball. We are lucky to have a solid intramural sports progam and we are even luckier to be getting a brand new complex devoted to IM sports with four multi-purpose fields, several baseball/softball fields and plenty of room to play.

New oppertunities when Spring comes around
The weather in Pennsylvania can be alittle crazy, there seems to be no spring sometimes. It goes from a warm end of winter straight into a blazing hot Summer. But here at Slippery Rock when we get those warm end of the semester there are several diffrent options when working out other than the ARC. There jogging, hicking and taking walks are always a good choice, with a small town it is easy to walk anywhere. Playing sports like softball, football, or soccer are fun to do with friends. Unfortunitly there are not to many intramurals in the spring that are outside but you can always find people to play a pick-up game in the afternoon.

Finding time to Excercise
As a student i am pretty busy with class and home work, but I always find time to exercise. I am on a 5 to 6 day lifting schedule that is not too strict. I mostly perform resistance training but i also perform plyometrics and medicance ball training. I try to get anywhere from a half an hour to an hour of cardio, usually in a traditional way like jogging and the elliptical. But i also play pick-up basketball and football to get a cardio workout in, and i feel like the more untraditional methods to be a better and more enjoyable workout.

My first post
I am a Student at Slippery Rock University who is majoring in Health & Physical Education. As i go through classes for I have found out how important staying in shape and taking care of your body is to leading a healthy life. Most commen health problems that people have and spend large amounts of money on trying to fix through theropy and medications, can be fixed by a healthier lifestyle. So as a future Physical Educator I think it is important that i set an example by being fit and inshape for my students. So now as a student I need to be physically active and lead that healthy lifestyle that I need to be healthy.
